Diocese celebrates 40th anniversary of Pride
Written by the Rev. Tom Jackson

Episcopalians across the Bay Area celebrated Pride this June with a month-long series of stories, lectures, movies and raising the rainbow flag high above St. Paul’s, Oakland. Our celebration culminated Sunday, June 27 as more than 100 people joined in our open air Pride Eucharist on Beale Street. The Rt. Rev Marc Andrus presided, the Rt. Rev. Mark Holmerud, bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America preached, and the Rev. Nancy Feniuk Nelson, Bishop Holmerud's associate, assisted. Oasis president the Rev. Tom Jackson served as deacon and Dan Burner assisted at the altar.

During the liturgy, we heard greetings from Bishop Naudal Alves Gomes of our companion diocese, the Diocese of Curitiba, who wrote: "It is with pride that we stand united with you in steadfast solidarity, for the equality and liberation of every human being; of every nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation” His letter was read by Michael Tedrick, our diocesan missioner in Curitiba. The Rev. Joyce Parry Moore brought greetings from the Women's Caucus and Paul Riofski greeted us on behalf of Dignity's San Francisco Chapter.

After Eucharist, about 50 Episcopalians marched down Market in the pride parade. Special thanks go to Travis Kennedy, George Carlson, Dan Burner, Andrew Aldrich, and Trish Grima for serving as parade monitors and to Alex Han for helping with preparations.
