Anthony Turney Reaches Santiago de Compostela Cathedral

June 1, 2010

Over five weeks, the Ven. Anthony Turney trekked on a pilgrimage that countless Christians have made for more than 1,000 years. There is no one route; the 'Camino' can take one of any number of pilgrimage routes, all ending at the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain, where tradition has it that the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried.

Considered one of the most important pilgrimages in the Middle Ages, the traditional Camino to Santiago de Compostela was dying out by the 1980s. A resurgence occurred in the late 1980s and continues today as the route was named the first European Cultural Route by the Council of Europe and later, one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.
